Saltire Facilities Management is expanding its facilities management offering as it eyes a strong and stable future.

Saltire has enjoyed an excellent reputation as a first-class gas and central heating provider since it was established in 2001, and is now broadening its facilities management offering even further.

Its Gas Division manages a large portfolio of gas installation, maintenance, and servicing contracts across Scotland and North West England, currently supporting more than 100,000 households on behalf of social landlords and public sector organisations. In recent months Saltire has focused efforts on increasing its workforce, expanding the facilities management services it offers, and servicing contracts with an increasing number of housing associations.

The facilities management provider, which now directly employs around 400 skilled tradespeople and highly-trained customer service representatives, has worked to strengthen its numbers and broaden the range of services on offer, as it has gained a range of diverse contracts such as electrical services, void repairs, electrical vehicle charger installations, and solar panel maintenance. With around 100 staff from across all trades recently brought into Saltire, the company is now firmly focused on winning new contracts from existing clients, as well as adding to its portfolio of public sector customers.

Saltire Service Delivery Director Natalie Milne, said of the recent expansion, “Saltire’s reputation for first-class quality and 24/7 customer service has been well established over the past 20 years. While we’ve traditionally focused on gas and central heating services, we’ve now built out our Electrical and Renewables Divisions, and made sure they’re supported by an increased number of all-trades supports staff.

Saltire Facilities Management is refurbishing two tower blocks, which had previously been earmarked for demolition, to provide temporary homes for families fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The contract to provide electrical services in 200 homes in Coatbridge and Wishaw has been awarded by North Lanarkshire Council, which itself accessed £5million from the Scottish Government to fund the work.

On completion of the refurbishment of these 200 homes, Ukrainian families will be able to move out of hotel accommodation, and make themselves at home in North Lanarkshire until they are able to safely return to their home country.

The towers in Coatbridge and Wishaw had been earmarked for demolition as part of North Lanarkshire Council’s strategy to demolish residential towers and replace them with new and different residences. With the war in Ukraine causing a refugee crisis this was reassessed, and they have since been reinstated as homes which will be fully refurbished to welcome people escaping the violence over the next few weeks.

Saltire’s Electrical Division will be installing interlinked smoke alarms, new electric heating systems, and new hot water throughout the properties.

Saltires Facilities Management has installed more than 60,000 new smoke alarm systems in response to changing Scottish Government legislation, as it continues in partnership with dozens of social landlords, councils, and housing associations across the country.

Already recognised as one of the foremost facilities management specialists, Saltire’s public sector smoke alarm installation contracts have increased considerably due to the new legislation, which was implemented in February this year. This new legislation requires all Scottish households and premises to have an interlinked fire and smoke alarm system, as well as sufficient carbon monoxide protection.

To date Saltire have partnered with dozens of public sector organisations such as North Lanarkshire Council, and Loreburn, Ochilview, Waverly, and Dumfries and Galloway housing associations. As well as smoke alarm installations, Saltire’s trusted teams of experts carry out a range of gas, electrical and renewables services at more than 120,000 properties across Scotland and North West England.

Saltire Facilities Management has been appointed to a national electric vehicle charger contract by public procurement specialist Scotland Excel.

The contract to install electric vehicle on behalf of public sector organisations, is valued at £80 million and will run for four years. It will see Saltire increase its commitment to helping public sector organisations across Scotland meet their net-zero goals, ahead of the Scottish Government target date of 2045.

Saltire is already the building and home services partner of choice for dozens of social landlords and housing associations across the country, delivering a range of decarbonisation services to more than 120,000 homes.

With decarbonisation and renewables becoming ever more critical to public sector organisations, Saltire is poised to become the provider of choice across the country, with 90% geographical coverage across Scotland and expertise in a wide range of renewable technologies, including air source heat pumps, electric vehicle chargers, solar panels, and solar battery storage.

As part of United Capital, some of Saltire’s senior leaders recently attended UC22, our group-wide conference which was held in Dubai. It wasn’t only those at the top levels of the business who attended though; each group company also had the opportunity to take along some of the brightest and best young people.

From Saltire came Nicola Barr, who was named the United Capital Rising Star of the Year and Jack Boyd, who was nominated by his peers as Apprentice of the Year. We also had some of our younger developing leaders attend the conference, and we thought it would be a nice idea to get them all inspired and show them a little bit about what the United Capital group is all about.

Well – what did I know! While we thought it would be doing our youngest employees a great service to show them what’s possible, they were more than up for the challenge and showed up absolutely brilliantly. Given a 30-minute breakout session they decided together to set up a United Capital Apprentice Board, which will meet regularly, discuss their development, and report back to the exec board.

It’s a brilliant idea, one they’ll own and make real now that we’re all back at our desks and our days jobs. For me, it was a brilliant demonstration of the level of confidence they have already developed, despite being so early in their careers.

And that’s why I know the future of our company is so bright; with a vibrant and growing apprentice community, our workforce is fairly young, and that makes Saltire a company full of ideas, hustle, and ambition. This generation of young people is proactive and ambitious, and they know they’re in charge of their own futures. As our business continues to grow, these young people will develop into industry leaders with knowledge, passion, and confidence, and that sets Saltire streets ahead of the competition.

United Capital recently held it’s Employee of the Year ceremony, and Saltire’s own Jack Boyd and Nicola Barr received the Apprentice of the Year and Rising Star Award, respectively. We’ve asked them about their win, their upcoming trip to the United Capital company conference, and their futures in the group.

How did you feel when you found out some of your colleagues had nominated you?

Jack: I was surprised and shocked, but I was absolutely delighted and really proud of myself. I felt a real sense of achievement.

Nicola: It was a good feeling and made me feel privileged, as it shows that my colleagues think I am doing well. It’s good to know how supportive they are!

Which of the United Capital values (Relentless, Ambitious, Committed, Entrepreneurial) do you think you represent the most?

Jack: I think the values that represent me most are ambitious and committed. I am a great believer in ‘if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right’. I am always committed and I ensure that every job I do is carried out to the best of my ability.

Nicola: Ambitious and committed. I show that I am committed in everything I do within the workplace, and I am always determined to achieve my goals.

What do you want to get out of attending the United Capital group conference in Dubai?

Jack: I am really excited to attend the conference in Dubai, what an experience! I feel very lucky and privileged to have been given this opportunity. I know I will learn from this and it will be an experience to remember.

Nicola: I would like to learn more about the future of the group, and find out in more depth how I can be successful within the company as it keeps growing.

What are your ambitions for your future as part of United Capital?

Jack: My main ambition in life is to achieve as much as I can. I am very ambitious and motivated and always strive to make myself better. My long term goals are continuing to learn and grow, take on additional responsibilities and contribute as much value as possible to the team.

Nicola: My ambitions for the future as part of United Capital is to stay committed and remain determined to achieve my goals, and hopefully work my way up within the company.

Saltire’s young winners have been commended in The Scottish Parliament by North Lanarkshire MSP Stephanie Callaghan, who lodged a motion congratulating their achievement.

Saltire Facilities Management is part of the United Capital group, one of the country’s largest home services and decarbonisation organisations. The group’s annual company conference is due to be held in Dubai next month, and all group employees were offered a chance to take part in what was known as ‘The Race to Dubai’ – an Employee of the Year competition which awarded winners with a place at the company conference.

Faced with nominations for more than 40 employees across the group, the United Capital board eventually chose the standout nominees, two of whom are Saltire employees.

Jack Boyd was chosen as Saltire’s Apprentice of the Year, while Administration Assistant Nicola Barr was recognised as the United Capital Rising Star.

The United Capital group will hold its annual company conference in Dubai on 14th May, and will celebrate a year of fast-paced growth as it pivots it services to support decarbonisation of the built environment.

Building services sometimes suffers from a reputation that it no longer deserves, and that makes bringing people into our business, and our industry, a little harder than it might otherwise be.

If you do just a little digging, you often find that people’s perceptions of building services are pretty dated; according to surveys, when young people hear the word ‘construction’ they think ‘dirty, messy, dangerous, and a huge contributor to climate change’. And what really stands out as a recurring theme is that building services is not flexible or family-friendly, and so feels unwelcoming to women in particular.

At Saltire, we have built a culture over the last 20 years, which is absolutely welcoming to women, and in fact to any employee who has caring responsibilities, or for whatever reason might be suited to something a little different to the old 9-5 routine. We’re a very female-led business in many ways; our 247 call centre is led by women and full of female employees who are highly trained, multi-skilled, and critical in dealing with domestic emergency situations quickly and safely.

It’s because we offer our customers a 247 service that many of our employees can find a way to make their career work alongside their other responsibilities; for example, a four days on/four days off shift pattern can really help to cut down on childcare needed, working late at night leaves days free for people who need or want to structure their lives that way.

We are lucky to have teams full of people who are brilliant at their jobs, and who have stuck with us for many years; it’s because of them that our culture feels closer to family than to any dated perceptions that people outside of building services might have of us. Hopefully, those old-fashioned notions of what it means to be a women in the construction industry are being replaced with more positive stories like ours – and in fact, we recently signed the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge, which commits us to attracting and welcoming more women to our industry.

It’s been a few years since we could really get out into the local community of North Lanarkshire, and talking to people about why they should consider getting into building services as a career. With things now looking much brighter, we’ll be back out on the road again soon, challenging perceptions about the building services industry, and showing young people why a career that involves cutting-edge renewable technologies might just be worth considering after all. We’re really glad to be part of the United Capital group’s United For All campaign, which is dispelling the old myths about our industry, and we’ll be talking about this a lot more over the next few months.

Saltire Facilities Management, one of Scotland’s foremost central heating and electrical services providers, has been appointed to a Falkirk Council framework to provide gas boiler maintenance and annual servicing at council house properties throughout the area.

Saltire was established 20 years ago, and has since become a trusted partner to more than 30 public sector organisations including housing associations, social landlords, and councils. The company, which offers a multi-trades service and employs more than 300 people across Central Scotland, currently provides services to tenants in more than 120,000 homes across Scotland and North West England.

This appointment is the most recent award in a relationship between Falkirk Council, and United Capital group companies, Saltire Facilities Management, and sister company McGill. Main contractor McGill, which is based in Dundee and North Lanarkshire, is currently delivering two separate multi-trades contracts on behalf of Falkirk Council. This framework is set to run until 2026, and is valued at £4.5million.

Speaking of the appointment, Service Delivery Director Natalie Milne, commented “Saltire Facilities Management has become the go-to contractor for public sector organisations right across the country, and this partnership with Falkirk Council is another step in that direction.

One of the key considerations for Falkirk Council was the need to develop close working relationships with their suppliers, and our ability to build partnerships, such as with North Lanarkshire Council, is what sets us apart from other companies.

VAT on renewable technologies has been slashed to 0%, making a low-carbon home more accessible and affordable.

This is great news for homeowners across the country, who are motivated by the Scottish government target date of 2045 for zero greenhouse gas emissions, and want to make a positive impact on the climate in their own way.

With this exciting announcement from the Chancellor, we are hearing from customers that the reduction in VAT, from 5% on some materials, to 0% on all materials and the cost of installation, is what they needed to hear before deciding to install solar panels, air or ground source heat pumps, or internal and external insulation.

With a series of ever-changing grants and loans on offer, until now it has been tricky for people to work out what help is available to them, but this change offers a blanket reduction in cost which is proving significant to many of our domestic customers.  It makes renewables immediately more accessible, and that will lead to mass uptake, which in turns will push costs downwards – in fact, The Treasury estimates that this change will wipe £65million off of the total cost of energy saving measures over the next 40 years.

So, what might this 0% VAT rate mean for you, the homeowner? The Chancellor envisions that you could save around £1000 on the installation of solar panels, as well as approximately £300 on your energy bills each year – and remember there are still a range of grants and loans on offer, though they do require a little bit of research.

Saltire is already a well-established name in renewable technologies, and we’re currently working on solar panel and air source heat pump projects right across the country. Few of our competitors have amassed the experience that our Renewables Division has, and we’re anticipating that this VAT reduction will mean we’ll be working on a huge amount of homes over the next few years.
