Saltire Facilities Management has been awarded a gas heating services replacement contract by North Lanarkshire Council, continuing the long-standing relationship between the two.

The contract, which is valued at £10m, is set to begin in the coming weeks, and will run until 2024, with the option to extend to 2026. This award, which involves the removal and replacement of gas heating systems including boilers, radiators, pipework and associated works, is the latest from North Lanarkshire Council, and represents a further strengthening of a partnership which has lasted for more than two decades.

Saltire Facilities Management has been working with North Lanarkshire Council since January 2001, and is currently contracted to deliver gas and electric heating services to approximately 37,000 homes across North Lanarkshire, as well as installing renewables such as air source heat pumps and solar panels (PV) in domestic and commercial properties throughout the region.

The central heating, renewables, and facilities management specialist is one of the largest employers in the North Lanarkshire area, as well as running a thriving apprenticeship programme for local school leavers, with 23 apprentices currently serving their time at Saltire Facilities Management. At any time, around 120 Saltire employees are dedicated to delivering contracts on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council including installation teams, gas engineers, administrative support staff, electricians and joiners, all directly employed from the local community.

Speaking of the latest contract award, Installations Director Alan Murray, commented, “North Lanarkshire Council is an incredibly important customer to Saltire, and this latest £10m contract award demonstrates how closely we work together to serve the residents of North Lanarkshire. For twenty years we’ve delivered a wide range of services to tenants in the area, and we work absolutely hand-in-hand with our partners at the council at all times. We are eager to get started on this contract and continue building links right across the area.”

Saltire Facilities Management announces today that it has signed the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge, and has committed to building an ever more inclusive workplace culture, promoting sex equality, and championing equal representation on boards.

Saltire has been ahead of the curve in the construction industry for many years, with a high percentage of women in senior and director roles at the company, and now has signed the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge as a signal of its commitment to promoting change across the wider industry.

Saltire is part of the United Capital group, which was co-founded by CEO Graeme Carling, and Merger & Acquisitions Director Leanne Carling, and has chosen to sign the pledge now to coincide with International Women’s Day.

Launched by Construction News, the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge gives companies a focus and a framework for developing more inclusive workplaces. Construction News Editor Lem Bingley said, “We’ve launched the Inspiring Women in Construction Pledge to offer a clear focus for the many companies in our sector that want to become more welcoming to women. The Pledge offers a simple formula for making progress towards greater gender equality, as well as a visible way to tell the world you aim to be part of the solution, not the problem.”

Saltire’s Service Delivery Director, Natalie Milne commented “Saltire is already a really inclusive place to work; we employ women at all levels of the business, and we offer a variety of roles and hours which suit our diverse workforce, from apprentices to those who are set to retire.

There is always more we can do though, and committing to the Inspiring Women in Construction pledge renews our focus on diversity and equality. Because we are already such a diverse organisation we are a great example to other companies in our sector, and the women who work at Saltire are a shining light in an industry where equality isn’t always where it should be.”

As a new year dawns, many of us make resolutions – but how many companies make resolutions about things they want to accomplish over the next 12 months?

This year Saltire is making a resolution, an important one: to talk more regularly and more openly about mental health, making ours a safe company to work in if you’re struggling.

The sad and uncomfortable truth is that those who work in building services seem to be more vulnerable to experiencing mental health problems than in any other industry. In fact, two people in our industry die by suicide each day in the UK, and that needs to be a statistic which makes every single leader to question if they’re doing enough to support their workforce.

We understand many of the reasons for this vulnerability. A large amount of the industry workforce is male, and suicide rates are higher in young men that in any other demographic. Manual labour can be difficult and relentless work, to be carried out no matter what the weather forecast says. Shift work – even for those in office-based or call centre roles – can be tough on mental health. And we know that, across the industry, many people are working in financially unstable conditions – permanent, well-paid, stable roles are not the norm unfortunately, although at Saltire we try to offer long-term stable work in every instance where it’s possible.

Social value makes work meaningful

One of the ways we try to make work more enjoyable and meaningful is through being of genuine social value in our local community. Being part of the community has always been massively important to our culture and to our success, and we never take that for granted.

What does that mean? Well, lots of different things really. For example, each year we welcome a large intake of apprentices from local schools, and to date we’ve offered permanent employment to every one of them. In recent months we’ve donated to foodbanks, offered prizes to our partners who are running pre-Christmas raffles, and donated our time to install a defibrillator in the local area, after residents raised funds to buy one.

Lots of our staff have causes that are dear to their hearts, and we’ll actively support them wherever we can. That contributes to morale, makes people feel good about coming to work, and gives a sense of family too – that we’re all in this together, trying to make something good happen.

Our teams show up for each other

After the last few years – in which our staff kept showing up to work while much of the country was furloughed or working at home – we’ve got much to thank them for. If we can help our people feel that they’re making a positive contribution to our wee corner of the world, then just maybe we’re contributing to a positive culture that will keep mental health problems at bay.

You’ll hear many organisations claim to be ‘one big happy family’ and it doesn’t always come off as authentic. At Saltire though, we run a 24-hour call centre that never stops, so we spend early mornings, and late evenings, and Christmas Day, and Easter, and birthdays, and weekends together. That type of togetherness bonds people, and we know that a sense of welcome, belonging, and lifelong friendship is one of the reasons we have so many long-term staff members.

Ultimately, mental health is such a pervasive challenge in our society, and every organisation will have employees who are struggling, or who are supporting friends or family members. Small changes, such as supporting some employees to become Mental Health First Aiders, can really change the conversation around mental health in the workplace. Our intention is that in 2022, we lose the taboo, and make sure we’re having open and judgement-free conversations with our workplace family.

Saltire’s positive social impact has been a driving factor throughout 2021 and into 2022

Since Saltire Facilities Management was established 25 years ago, its roots have been firmly planted in the local community. 2021 has been no different, as Saltire has continued to focus on its social impact during a second year of the pandemic.

At the beginning of 2021, working conditions at Saltire were still difficult, with another lockdown in place and only essential work being undertaken. Our teams continued to work in order to support customers who had domestic emergencies such as boiler breakdowns, and our tradespeople were out and about on a daily basis working in homes across the country.

Jobs in the community, for the community

While this work had to continue, it was more difficult than usual, and for one group in particular – our young apprentices. Apprenticeships mean learning on the job, and with a ban on people travelling together in vans, this was made almost impossible. That didn’t stop us hiring more apprentices in 2021 though, with another six coming on board to kickstart their career at Saltire. In fact, right now we have a total of 23 apprentices, all at various stages of their time, and this year we’ve retained 9 former apprentices who are now fully qualified engineers and plumbers.

That’s 32 jobs in the local community – well-paying, steady jobs, with a company which is committed to lifelong learning for those who want to move onwards and upwards. The social impact of that is huge in some of our local neighbourhoods, and we’ll stay committed to our apprentices no matter how tough it can be to give them the standard apprenticeship experience while the pandemic continues to rumble on.

Spreading our social impact far and wide

We play our part in the local community in a number of other ways , and will continue to make a positive social impact a pillar of our success in 2022. We’ve partnered with the North Lanarkshire’s Working scheme to bring three more people into our call centre, and we’ve supported local charities and clients in a range of ways. From installing a community defibrillator, to donating vouchers to our customer Almond Housing Association as they distribute food parcels, and giving money towards a pergola to shelter the Muddy Boots kids club when it visits Whinhall Allotments in Airdrie, we mean it when we say that our local community is a pillar of our success, and one of the main reasons we work so hard even during the toughest times.

With an ever-increasing focus on decarbonisation, our dedicated Eco Team is committed to installing solar panels and air source heat pumps across the country, making our social impact ever more linked to sustainability. As we head in 2022 times are looking little tricky once again, but just like last time we’ll get through it by keeping our community at the heart of everything we do.

Thanks to Saltire’s Eco Division sheltered housing residents in North Lanarkshire are enjoying reduced energy bills and carbon footprints.

In partnership with long-term customer North Lanarkshire Council, Saltire is currently working to install air source heat pumps and battery storage for solar panels at a retirement complex housing in Shotts. With a programme of installations which is set to complete in 2026, Saltire is continuing its long-term partnership with the council, while pursuing its own shift towards renewable technologies, working sustainably, and decarbonisation of the built environment.

Saltire Facilities Management is one of the most experienced and trusted names when it comes to renewables technologies, and has vast experience installing air and ground source heat pumps, solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, and solar battery systems. As part of the United Capital decarbonisation investment group, Saltire is at the forefront of decarbonising the built environment, along with sister company McGill, which is the foremost installer of solar panels across the North East of Scotland.

Eco Operations Manager, who manages the project, commented, “This partnership with North Lanarkshire Council is having a wonderful impact on their residents, and it’s fantastic to see. Our Eco Division is so experienced that the installation is a quick and smooth process, and that’s a big consideration with vulnerable residents such as older people or those with disabilities. We work incredibly hard to complete each installation in one day.

“Air source heat pumps are highly efficient, and residents see their energy costs drop. It’s great to see these residents really play their part in building a more sustainable community, and we’re seeing more interest in both domestic and commercial air source heat pumps with every passing week.”

Saltire Installations Director Alan Murray commented, “Saltire is already one of the go-to companies for renewable technologies, and this is the direction the company will continue to go in. Many of our most forward-thinking public sector clients are making large-scale plans to implement air source heat pumps, solar panels, and electric vehicle charging points, and we’re delighted to partner with them. Decarbonisation needs to happen now, and along with the rest of the United Capital group, we’ll continue to play our part in that process, through new and existing renewables technologies.”

Saltire Facilities Management, one of the UK’s largest gas and electrical services companies, has been awarded a boiler replacement contract by Ruchazie Housing Association.

A community-based housing association based in the East End of Glasgow, Ruchazie currently owns and manages approximately 225 properties. Saltire Facilities Management has now been contracted by the housing association to replace boilers in a number of properties across Glasgow’s East End.

Saltire’s teams of highly skilled, qualified, Gas Safe Engineers will safely remove the existing boiler and replace with a Worcester Bosch 4000, a model of boiler which in the future has the potential to be run on a blend of gas and hydrogen. That means individual households will be set up to enjoy lower energy bills in the coming years, as well as a shrinking carbon footprint.

Saltire’s Installations Director Alan Murray said, “The Installations Team here at Saltire Facilities Management is extremely pleased to be working alongside Ruchazie Housing Association once again. Saltire is a Worcester Accredited Installer, and we have more than 150 Gas Safe Engineers working hard for our customers. Our trusted reputation and safety record means that we’re winning contracts time and again, both with existing customers and new clients.

As part of our customer-focused service, we always make sure that, with each installation completed, we hand over to the tenant a fully functional new boiler, along with a user guide and support from the onsite engineer in understanding the controls. It’s this attention to detail that puts Saltire at the top of the list when it comes to gas and electrical services right across the country.”

In Feb 2019 Scottish Government introduced changes to the current legislation requiring all households in Scotland to have an interlinked Fire and Smoke alarm system and that there should be adequate Carbon Monoxide protection. ALL homes in Scotland are required to meet the new legislation by February 2022.

These changes were introduced as a direct result of recent fire tragedies, including Grenfell, and covers both private and social housing properties. It will be the property owner’s responsibility to meet the new standard, however, the legal duty to enforce the standard rests with local authorities.

Aico, the European market leader in domestic Fire and Carbon Monoxide protection has the provided the following information about the changes and what you must do to be compliant.

“Fire and Smoke alarms must be interlinked, and this can be achieved via traditional cabling methods or wireless. This new legislation also requires a Carbon Monoxide detector to be installed where there is a fuel-burning appliance (such as boilers, fires, heaters, and stoves) or where there is a flue. Homeowners and landlords must comply to the new Scottish legislation by February 2022.

“All homes in Scotland will be covered by the new legislation, as it is important that all homes should be safe for occupants regardless of tenure.

“If you already have Fire and Smoke alarms installed in your property, check that they are interlinked. If you have an alarm system but it does not currently meet the new requirements, you can expand your system with wireless interconnection. By having an interlinked system, the whole alarm system will be triggered if one alarm is activated meaning you are alerted immediately in the event of a fire.”

To ensure your home is compliant with the new regulations before the February 2022 deadline, our team of expert electricians are on hand to help. Please get in touch with our office team who will connect you with the experts.

Saltire Facilities Management is delighted to announce that its call centre has been awarded a contract by River Clyde Homes, to deliver out of hours call handling services on behalf of the Inverclyde-based housing provider.

River Clyde Homes is an affordable housing provider, which owns and manages more than 6000 homes, and provides factoring services for a further 2,000 homes across the Inverclyde area.

The contract means that River Clyde Homes tenants have 24-hour access to a repairs and maintenance helpline, every day of the year. Saltire’s highly-trained customer service representatives will determine if the call is an emergency, and pass it on to the correct tradesperson to be dealt with immediately; non-emergencies will be logged in the River Clyde Homes scheduling software for action on the next working day. Saltire will hand in hand with River Clyde Homes, providing regular updates and analytics, by utilising the housing provider’s scheduling tool and housing management system.

This new contract represents a further expansion for Saltire Facilities Management’s call centre operations. The dedicated team of busy and professional customer service representatives have answered almost 500,000 calls from tenants and residents in the past 12 months, and already provide 24/7 out of hours call handling for a number of companies, including Ferguslie Park Housing Association.

Saltire Facilities Management, which has acted as the main heating service and maintenance provider to North Lanarkshire Council for 20 years, continues the relationship by winning two new contract awards, for electric heating replacements, and renewable heating replacements.

The electrical heating replacement contract, which is set to run until 2026, is worth approximately £500,000, and will be managed by Eco Operations Manager Aaron Walker and supported by a Tenant Liaison Officer who will be responsible for all tenant engagement. The renewable heating replacement contract is also five years in duration, and worth up to £3.5m in total. The scope of this contract includes the removal of existing gas and electric heating systems, and the installation of renewable heating systems in their place, including solar PV panels, air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and associated works, including communal renewable heating to tower blocks. This large and complex contract will be overseen by Installations Director Alan Murray, and supported by dedicated Contract Manager Aaron Walker, who will manage all resources. Tenants will be able to liaise directly with their dedicated Tenant Liaison Officer. Contract Manager Aaron Walker commented, “Saltire is one of the few large organisations with demonstrable experience in renewables, and we believe this expertise will continue to make us the provider of choice for public sector organisations with zero carbon commitments to meet.” Saltire has a long-established and successful relationship with North Lanarkshire Council, and has also recently been successful in being awarded a number of contracts from new clients such as Almond and Bield Housing Associations. Speaking of the company’s recent successes, Installations Director Alan Murray said “Saltire is looking at a period of real growth, and we know that our reputation for quality puts us ahead of the competition time and time again. It’s wonderful to balance our excellent relationship with North Lanarkshire Council with our growing portfolio of new clients across Scotland.”
